THIS VET KNOWS THE NEED FOR A HOME FOR THE BRAVE

Kimberly WashingtonKimberly Washington served in the United States Army for 15 years.

Now she works as a Family Readiness Support assistant in the Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Dix, NJ.

Professionally as well as personally, Kimberly Washington knows first-hand about the need for the new ‘Home for the Brave’ program of Volunteers of America Delaware Valley.

“Vets are homeless,” says Kimberly, who lives in Camden, NJ. “And they shouldn’t be homeless. You have so many soldiers who don’t know what their next step is. They aren’t going back home, because there is no home.”

‘Home for the Brave’ will address this issue, and more. Plans are under way for Volunteers of America Delaware Valley to begin providing employment, counseling and other services, including transitional housing, to male and female veterans by 2011.

Simply providing a home will go a long way toward helping needy veterans rebuild their lives, according to Kimberly. “They need a place to rest their heads,” she says, “so they can get back on their feet.”

Kimberly knows whereof she speaks; after her honorable discharge in 2004 she found herself on the verge of homelessness. “I’m an example of what Volunteers of America Delaware Valley does,” she says. “They helped me when I needed help.

“There is such a need for the ‘Home for the Brave’ program. Soldiers don’t have a place to live when they come home. They don’t have a job when they come home,” Kimberly continues.

“Now Volunteers of America Delaware Valley is stepping up and saying ‘we need to do something for the vets, and to have a place for them that’s a one-stop shop for services. Even if it is a temporary home, at least you can call it home. For Volunteers of America Delaware Valley to have something like this is outstanding. I appreciate it, as a vet.”
